December Meeting
Holiday Party!!!!

Come join us on Thursday, December 4, 2008 for the Holiday Party and luncheon at Woodhaven Country Club from 11:30 - 1:30. There are several activities planned so everyone can participate.

Enter our Christmas CENTERPIECE CONTEST. Bring a centerpiece and place it on a table. Members will vote on their favorite centerpiece. Winner gets a special prize! Please call Kathy Van Liew at (817) 416-6661 ext 133 or email her at kvanliew@downeypublishing.com to let her know you want to be a part of this event, centerpieces will be given away as door prizes!
Note: The theme “Christmases Past” was announced at the November luncheon, however you can bring any centerpiece you would like.

Bring 2 canned goods and/or non-perishable food items to be entered in a drawing for a prize. For every 2 items you donate, you will receive one ticket to be entered in a drawing for a gift basket! The more food items you bring, the more tickets you will receive and the greater your chances of winning one of the 3 gift baskets! Food goes to benefit the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Gift exchange is pure fun and strictly volunteer! Bring a gift ($10 max) and be ready for a good time!

Remember to bring your gift item for the Adopt a Family event benefiting a family at SafeHaven.

Volunteer of the Year will be recognized.

Scholarship recipients will be announced.

Chapter Members Making a Difference

TAFB Back Pack for Kids Program

Our chapter has committed to help at the Tarrant Area Food Bank to bag back pack lunches to be used in the Back Pack for Kids program. We need your help participating with this community effort by trying to attend any Wednesday night of the month. Volunteers meet at TAFB, 2600 Cullen Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107 at 6:00 pm. This is a great opportunity for family participation, especially if your children need community service hours for church or school. Contact Kim Markle at kim.markle@omniamerican.com for information.

Government Update

Recent Announcements from the SSA & IRS

The Social Security Administration announced on Thursday, October 16, 2008 the Social Security wage base will increase to $106,800 for 2009. This is an increase of $4,800 over the wage base of $102,000 for 2008. The maximum 2009 Social Security tax payable by each employee and the employer is $6,621.60.

As in prior years there is no limit on wages subject to Medicare tax; the tax rate remains at 1.45%. The FICA tax rate, which is the combined Social Security tax rate of 6.2% and the Medicare tax rate of 1.45%, remains at 7.65% for 2009.

Pension Plan Limits
The IRS announced 2009 dollar limits

  • The limitation on the exclusion for elective deferrals under 401(k) and 403(b) plans is increased from $15,000 to $16, 500.
  • The dollar limitation under Section 414(v)(2)(B)(i) for catch-up contributions to an applicable employer plan other than a plan described in Section 401(k)(11) or Section 408(p) for individuals aged 50 or over is increased from $5,000 to $5,500. The dollar limitation under Section 414(v)(2)(B)(ii) for catch-up contributions to an applicable employer plan described in Section 401(k)(11) or Section 408(p) for individuals aged 50 or over remains unchanged at $2,500.

Remind Employees to Review W-4s
IRS regulations require employers to remind your employees every year, by December 1, to review their W-4 status and file a new W-4 if necessary. You can comply with this requirement by placing a message on the paycheck stub. If you are really ambitious you can send an e-mail to all employees, place the information on your company Intranet, or send a memo to all employees with a new W-4.

Membership Renewal

Don’t miss out in 2009. Your membership renewal was due in October. Membership benefits include the lower luncheon rate of $19 so if you have not renewed your membership you will be charged the non-member rate of $24 at future luncheons.
